What's the best moped/scooter for commuting about 5 mi. to work and 5 mi. back from work, and otherwise to be used as my main transportation? The best under-50cc one especially. Car repair/maintenance/ins. etc. costs are killing me, enough to consider an alternative. I'm in the suburban Atlanta area, north Cobb county to be exact. The name of any good online or other resource for getting a crash course on scooter operation and maintenance would be great too! I tried test-driving one yesterday and I'm a bit off balance...

Take the MSF Basic Rider Course.

Then get your class M license, a 51cc scooter or 502ci Boss Hoss, it’s all the same to the State.

Looking at city-data.com you have about five inches of rain a month, every month. You will definitely appreciate the splash protection of a scooter.

Looking at street view in maps.google.com I see lots of 35mph zones, which means speed of traffic is 40-45 mph. I would go with a 150cc scooter so as to be able to maintain speed of traffic. On a 50cc you will have cars running up your backside trying to pass you. If you move over to the right they will brush you off the road. For safety you need to be able to out run the cages. Personally I would opt for a 250cc Vespa, so as to be able to run the freeways.

Yamaha, Honda, and Vespa make reliable small scooters. The Vespa guys have a lot of good information for a new rider:

Reliable scooter means I would look at the honda line. You have a really reputable builder with spares, and technical know how locally so you won’t have to wait forever to get something fixed when it goes wrong. The third link is to someone in your area selling a Ruckus for less than it would cost brand new.

    Anything not from China.

Good info above and I’ll throw in that the most reliable scooter is the one owned by a rider that does the proper maintenance.
