Little Yamaha scooter project CA50 was a 1982 made – running now and back to original owner. Campus scooter shop has some similar vintage scooters that have gone through 5 to 8 different student owners, 6 belts and couple sets of rings, 20,000-30,000 miles and are still running. These are maintained better than average but some of the Japanese 1990 models have similar mileage even if beat up looking. Maintenance is key, the ‘Moped’ licensed scooters are restricted speed with engines originally designed for 50% faster use so are not as abused in that respect. Belts and proper oiling, air filters as required will double usefull life compared to abused scooters.

Depends on who makes it, I think. When I was little I had a Honda qa 50, that was already old when it was given to me. I rode the wheels off of that thing, and it is probably still running, it got passed on to the next generation after I was through with it. I movred up to a bigger Honda after that, and there again, it ran forever. My Grandpa had an old Honda trail 90 for years, that ran forever too. Some of these Pep Boys bikes, and the like that you see now, though, not so much. They are just disposable. So it pays to get a good name, I think.

most chinese scooters suck pretty badly..
lets put it this way… i watched a scooter get completely destroyed over the course of 4 years when some dude left it on the roof of the parking garage for the building i worked at. all of the plastic rotted and pretty much fell off..
as far as the engines, the chinese engines are cheap.. you can replace it completely for around $300… so.. when it goes out, buy a new motor…..
the real answer though is….. it depends on how well you take care of it.

Air cooled 20,000+ Water cooled 30,000+ if it’s a name brand scooter with regular maintenance and not abused.
Longer with the Motoman break-in method that will seat the piston rings in 20 miles for a strong long lasting engine.
