Posted on 29 August, by under Scooter ChatHello, I live in Austin, TX and am considering buying a moped scooter like this:

I need to know about how much that's going to run, I am open to new and used. Also, are there any classes I would have to take to ride it? Do I have to get insurance? Does it run on gasoline? Thank you for any help. also, if you know of any places in Austin where I could buy one at a reasonable price, let me know! Thanks.

Gasoline is universal in the US, some now blended with ethanol. Austin is a large city, there will be a good many scooters on the used market to consider. Classified newspaper ads and craigslist.com and other internet sites are good to start with.
The picture looks like it is one of the 260cc motorscooters that are produced in China and sold on the Internet and some dealerships. I have seen them priced from $2100.00 to $3,500.00 USD. Typically if pruchased from a physical store front dealer the bike will cost more, but is prepared by the dealer, saving you the time and trouble if you have one delivered from an on-line dealer.
All scooters of displacement over 50cc are considered to be MOTORCYCLES by all states in the US, as such they must be insured, licensed, bear tags, and in some cases complete an inspecion. YOU will need at least a motorcycle learners permit and in some states only a full motorcycle endorsement is acceptable.
The MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) offers riding classes all over, certainly in the Austin area. Most states do not require you to take such a course, but it is a good thing to take for your own safety, and in addition most states will grant your full MC license upon passsing the course requirements.
